Pepe Touchamatic Wax Pen

This afternoon during a break from my bench, I was talking with a friend and was reminded of an old alcohol lamp that I worked with in college. It was nothing more than a baby food jar that had a small tube soldered to the lid which the wick passed through. Later I was introduced to a real alcohol lamp, still made out of glass, but it had a few surface facets to create its simply cut gem-like form. I loved how I could tip the device onto one of the sure footed facets leaning it in towards my work area. This allowed me to work more closely to the flame with my wax model keeping the wax hotter and more controllable in applying wax at varying temperatures such as adding a sprue, or mending a break on a delicate piece caused by working too quickly.

Welcome Guest Writer: Jim Dailing

Hello fellow metal people!

Welcome to the inaugural Otto Frei blog post.  I’m Jim Dailing, and I’ll be writing about various tools and answering your questions as they arise.  I’ve been making things for many years, working with and selling many types of tools, and teaching around the country.  If you have any questions about projects, processes, which flexshaft to buy, or how to lubricate and maintain that beautiful new flexshaft drop me a line here and I will do my best to help you through things.  I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Here’s a quick tip to start things off.  When using a split mandrel for sanding the inside of a ring, first take the strip of sandpaper and lightly roll the back of the paper over the edge of a table top like you would a piece of ribbon for wrapping a present.  This will help the sandpaper last longer while minimizing its tearing during use.

Make good stuff!

Jim
